Class 4 Maths – Chapter 4: Multiplication and Division
What is multiplication:
Multiplication is a mathematical term used to represent the process of multiplying two numbers. The process is usually done by repeatedly adding the value of one number to itself.
Multiplication is an important mathematical term. It is the process of multiplying two numbers together. Multiplication can be done by repeatedly adding the value of one number to itself, so when you multiply 2 x 3, it can be thought of as “2 + 2 + 2 = 6.”
Properties of multiplication
a. The product of a number and 0 is 0.
b. The product of a number and 1 is equal to that number.
c. To multiply a number with 10,20,30 etc, first multiply skipping zero and add zero at end of the product. Example: 32×20 can be done as step1: (32×2) = 64, step2: add 0 at end, 640
d. To multiply a number with 100,200,300 etc, first multiply skipping zero and add two zero at end of the product. Example: 32×200 can be done as step1: (32×2) = 64, step2: add 00 at end, 6400
e. The product of 2 numbers is independent of the order of multiplicands. Ex: 6×9 = 54. If we change order of 6 and 9. i.e 9×6=54
What is division:
Division is repeated subtraction of same number. The number to be divided is called dividend, the number that divides is called divisor, the result after division is called quotient and remaining number is called remainder.
